Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore and Timothy Hutton star in this drama directed by Robert Redford. Calvin and Beth Jarrett (Sutherland and Tyler Moore) are attempting to regain some measure of normalcy in their lives after the accidental death of their eldest son and the attempted suicide of their youngest son Conrad (Hutton). After spending four months in a psychiatric hospital, Conrad returns home but remains unable to overcome his guilt about his brother´s death.
Although Calvin tries to support Conrad, Beth´s bitterness towards Conrad threatens to fracture the family beyond repair. The cast also includes Judd Hirsch, Elizabeth McGovern and Fredric Lehne
