When naive young Scottish doctor Nicholas Garrigan (McAvoy) arrives in 1970s Uganda seeking adventure, he soon finds himself on a shocking journey into darkness. Befriended by the country´s charismatic new leader Idi Amin (Whitaker) and appointed as his personal physician, Nicholas is originally blinded by Amin´s larger-than-life and charming persona.

However, when the terrible truth of Amin´s despotic rule becomes clear, Nicholas must fight for both his life and his soul. The cast also includes Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson and David Oyelowo
