Their mother Emilie (Ewa Fröling) marries puritanical Bishop Edvard (Jan Malmsjö) and the new family move into his joyless, draughty home.
The children are mistreated and Emilie becomes consumed with regrets, seeking a divorce that won´t grant Edvard custody of her children
