The film follows Paul (Dafoe) as he travels to the Mexican village of Real de Catorce to settle his late father´s estate. There, he discovers a photograph of a woman amongst his father´s belongings and determines to find her.
Using a translation device, he interrogates the locals about the woman´s possible whereabouts. Meanwhile, a team of film-makers arrive in the remote village in search of stories for their documentary and eventually cross paths with Paul
