Benh Zeitlin co-writes and directs this Academy Award-nominated fantasy drama about a six-year-old girl struggling to survive in the flooded bayous of Louisiana. Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) and her father Wink (Dwight Henry) live in ´the Bathtub´, a poverty-stricken, semi-feral swamp area outside the protection of the New Orleans levee system. She sees herself as a ´little piece of a big, big universe´ inhabiting a semi-magical world where everything is part of an interrelated, organic whole.
With an absent mother, and her father sick, Hushpuppy´s tenacious character and survival instincts are soon tested to the limits, when the onset of a colossal storm threatens to obliterate the unprotected community. With the waters rising, and determined to save the world she loves, Hushpuppy and her father take to the water in a makeshift boat fashioned from the back of an old pickup truck, in one last desperate effort to survive
