Having returned home to his wife Nancy (Haddock) after the First World War, Robert is struggling both to write and to process the trauma he experienced on the battlefield. When he finds inspiration again after reading the work of Laura Riding (Agron), Nancy encourages her to visit and the three of them are soon caught up in a complicated and ultimately destructive relationship.
