At the California Jam in 1974, the Woodstock for hard rock fans, Deep Purple debuted with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes in the Mk III line-up. Although the rock legends Gillan and Glover were replaced, they set the stage (literally) on fire with an explosive appearance fueled by raw energy. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore smashed guitars, amplifiers and even a television camera, and additionally caused an explosion. Hughes recalls that this was a pivotal moment for the Heavy Rock, capturing the essence of the pre-MTV era and left a lasting testimony to the band’s development. This electrifying appearance cemented Deep Purples place in the history of Arena Rock.
