Richard Chamberlain and Glenda Jackson star in this biographical drama directed by Ken Russell. Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Chamberlain) struggles to overcome memories of his traumatic childhood but succeeds in attracting Madame Nadezhda von Meck (Izabella Telezynska) as his patron, which boosts his musical career. However, his marriage to Antonina Milyukova (Jackson) is a difficult one, for his interests lie elsewhere and he lusts after Count Anton Chiluvsky (Christopher Gable).

Soon, his inner turmoil threatens to destroy both himself and Antonina. The cast also includes Kenneth Colley, Max Adrian and Bruce Robinson
