Henry Guthrie (Fiennes), recently returned from working in Germany, is reluctantly hired to lead the choir and he begins recruiting new members before attempting to stage a performance of Edward Elgar´s ´The Dream of Gerontius´. Despite the committee´s reservations, Guthrie´s talent is undeniable and as he showcases new voices, those awaiting news from the Front find some measure of hope to cling to during the dark days of war.
