Josef von Sternberg directs this 1930s American drama starring Phillips Holmes, Sylvia Sidney and Frances Dee. Former hotel bellhop Clyde Griffiths (Holmes) is given a second chance in his turbulent life when his wealthy factory owner uncle, Samuel (Frederick Burton), offers Clyde a job in New York. It´s not long before Clyde begins to excel in his new role, and attracts the attention of his colleague, Roberta (Sidney) despite the factory´s strict protocol against romantic relationships between employees.

By the time Roberta later realises she is pregnant, however, Clyde has already fallen for the beautiful young Sondra (Dee) and so concocts a wicked scheme to remove Roberta from his life
