Helmut Wildt and Ingmar Zeisberg star in this West German drama directed by Helmut Käutner. In the aftermath of WWII, the town of Sohnen survives largely because of the American Air Force base situated there, though the locals resent its presence. Truck driver Robert Neidhardt (Wildt) is part of a team constructing roads for the base and he regularly steals gravel to sell on the black market.
When he unexpectedly crosses paths with his former girlfriend Inge (Zeisberg), who is now married to an American, tragedy ensues. The cast also includes Hans Cossy, Wolfgang Büttner and Anita Höfer
