Franco Nero and Vanessa Redgrave star in this giallo directed by Elio Petri. Artist Leonardo Ferri (Nero) has been struggling to paint and so he decides to leave Milan behind and find a place in the countryside where he can relax and seek inspiration. When he discovers an abandoned villa, he is immediately drawn to it but when his agent and lover Flavia (Redgrave) visits, she suffers a series of inexplicable accidents and leaves in fear.

As Leonardo learns more about the history of the villa and its previous inhabitant, he falls under the influence of dark forces he does not understand. The cast also includes Georges Géret, Gabriella Boccardo and Rita Calderoni
