Robert Dapes (Connery) is a cynical mercenary who comes to Cuba at the request of one of Batista’s most corrupt functionaries, General Bello (Martin Balsam). Once there, he finds himself unable to ignore the brutality and depravity of the Batista regime - or Alexandra Pulido (Adams), a lover who is now married to a wealthy Cuban landowner. Surrounded by volatile guerrilla fighters and the human vultures present at all coups, he must come to terms with himself and his shifting views.
