Danny Kaye stars in this musical comedy directed by Melvin Frank and Norman Panama. In medieval England, carnival performer Hubert Hawkins (Kaye) impersonates a court jester in order to infiltrate the court of the tyrannical King Roderick who has recently usurped the throne. Hawkins is part of a plot to overthrow Roderick and save the life of the true king, who is still an infant.
However, the situation becomes increasingly complicated when Hawkins falls under the spell of the witch Griselda (Mildred Natwick). The cast also includes Glynis Johns, Basil Rathbone and Angela Lansbury
