In the diverse Manhattan neighbourhood of Washington Heights, bodega owner Usnavi de la Vega (Ramos) dreams of returning to his native Dominican Republic to restore his late father´s bar while attempting to romance Vanessa (Melissa Barrera), who works at the local nail salon but aspires to become a fashion designer downtown.
