Viggo Mortensen writes, directs and stars in this Western set in 1860s San Francisco. Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), an independent French-Canadian woman, has a fateful encounter with Danish carpenter Holger Olsen (Mortensen) in the American West. The two soon fall in love and begin to build a life together, but everything changes when the emergence of the Civil War calls Holger to enlist in the Union Army, despite Vivienne´s objections.
Forced to get by on her own, things take a sinister turn when the local landowner´s sadistic son, Weston Jeffries (Solly McLeod), brutally assaults her. When Holger finally returns, will things ever be the same?
