Roy Scheider, Bruno Cremer, Francisco Rabal and Amidou star in this action thriller directed by William Friedkin. Four men on the run for different reasons - gangster Jackie Scanlon (Scheider), corrupt banker Victor Manzon (Cremer), assassin Nilo (Rabal) and terrorist Kassem (Amidou) - each find their way to a remote village in Central America where they are forced to live in extreme poverty. Desperate to escape, they accept a dangerous job transporting dynamite which has been stored improperly and is thus highly unstable.

The men, who barely know and do not trust each other, are forced to work together as a team as they attempt to survive the long and perilous journey. The cast also includes Karl John, Ramon Bieri and Peter Capell
